American Culture — As Seen by an Irish Student
In the early fall of 2023, I met Sarah Egan, a junior at the University of Galway in Ireland who was studying abroad in the United States for the semester. We subsequently worked on two student theatre productions together between September and November of that year, both in acting and production roles. With her return to Ireland rapidly approaching, several of her friends, including myself, spent the day with her on Saturday, December 2, doing typical American things around the Research Triangle area and got to hear her thoughts and reflections on America as a whole.
Communicating Doors – LAB! Theatre
In the early fall of 2023, I acted in a production of the stage play Communicating Doors put on by LAB! Theatre, one of UNC-Chapel Hill’s student theatre companies. This video was filmed during rehearsals throughout the week of September 24 – October 1. It features a variety of scenes that were performed prior to the installation of the set the following week. During this time, actors primarily worked on blocking, which refers to their staging and placement on the set throughout the performance.
Communicating Doors was written in 1994 by British playwright Alan Ayckbourn and takes place in a hotel suite where three women, each respectively finding themselves in the room in 1974, 1994, and 2014, must travel back and forth through time using the room’s communicating door to prevent their own impending murders. The play had its original premiere on February 2, 1994, at the Stephen Joseph Theatre in Scarborough, North Yorkshire, England. It subsequently moved to London’s West End, where it opened on August 7, 1995.
